New Cars for 2022: First Impressions and Key Highlights

The 2022 model year brought an exciting selection of new and redesigned vehicles to the automotive market. Manufacturers introduced completely redesigned models, upgraded luxury cars, new electric vehicles, and SUVs packed with the latest technology.

For luxury-car enthusiasts, 2022 was particularly interesting. The year saw the arrival of the all-new Range Rover, the technologically impressive Mercedes-Benz EQS, and a new generation of premium SUVs and performance cars.

Here are some of the most interesting new cars for 2022 and the highlights that made them stand out.

1. 2022 Range Rover – A New Generation of Luxury

The all-new 2022 Range Rover was one of the most anticipated luxury SUVs of the year. It represented a major redesign of one of the world’s best-known luxury SUVs, while deliberately maintaining the recognizable Range Rover character.

At first glance, the changes might appear subtle. However, the new model was redesigned from the ground up, with a cleaner exterior, a more sophisticated interior, updated technology, and significant chassis improvements.

One of the most interesting additions was four-wheel steering, which helps make the large SUV more maneuverable in tight spaces. The new Range Rover was also available with standard- and long-wheelbase configurations, including versions capable of seating up to seven passengers.

Inside, the focus was on simplicity and refinement. The cabin features premium materials, a large central touchscreen, sophisticated climate controls, and extensive personalization options.

Highlights

  • Completely redesigned for 2022
  • Four-wheel steering
  • Available seven-seat configuration
  • Luxury-focused interior
  • Air suspension
  • Advanced off-road technology
  • Available V8 power
  • New-generation infotainment system

The first impression is simple: the new Range Rover looks familiar, but almost everything underneath has evolved.

2. 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS – New Cars for 2022  First impression along with some highlights

The Mercedes-Benz EQS represented a major step into the electric luxury-car market.

Instead of simply converting an existing Mercedes sedan into an EV, Mercedes designed the EQS around its electric architecture. The result was a large luxury vehicle focused on quietness, comfort, technology, and efficiency.

One of its most recognizable features was the available MBUX Hyperscreen, which integrates multiple displays into a large curved glass panel across the dashboard.

The EQS was also praised for its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and impressive technology. Car and Driver included the EQS among its 2022 Editors’ Choice luxury electric vehicles, highlighting its interior, technology, and range relative to several German competitors.

Highlights

  • Fully electric luxury sedan
  • MBUX Hyperscreen
  • Extremely quiet cabin
  • Advanced driver-assistance technology
  • Premium interior
  • Large digital displays
  • Long-distance touring capability

The EQS showed that electric vehicles could compete directly with traditional flagship luxury sedans.

3. 2022 Cadillac Escalade – Technology Meets American Luxury

The Cadillac Escalade continued to make a strong impression in 2022.

Although the current generation had been introduced for the 2021 model year, it remained one of the standout luxury vehicles in 2022. Cars.com selected the Escalade as its Best Luxury Car of 2022, praising its combination of styling, quality, technology, and capability.

The biggest attraction inside the Escalade was its enormous digital display system.

The dashboard incorporates three OLED screens measuring a combined 38 inches diagonally, creating one of the most impressive digital interiors available in a luxury SUV at the time.

The Escalade also offers enormous interior space, making it particularly attractive to families and buyers who want a large luxury SUV.

Genesis continued to establish itself as a serious competitor in the luxury-car market with the new GV70.

The compact luxury SUV combines distinctive styling with a premium interior and a wide range of technology. For 2022, it entered a highly competitive segment occupied by models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and other established luxury brands.

Cars.com named the GV70 a nominee for its 2022 Best Luxury Car award, highlighting the model’s design and overall appeal.

The GV70’s exterior design immediately separates it from many competitors, with its distinctive grille, slim lighting elements, and sculpted bodywork.

Inside, Genesis focused heavily on materials, comfort, and design.

Highlights

  • Distinctive exterior design
  • Premium interior
  • Advanced infotainment
  • Powerful engine options
  • Available all-wheel drive
  • Strong value proposition
  • Comfortable ride

The GV70 proved that luxury buyers did not necessarily have to choose a traditional German brand to get a sophisticated premium SUV.

5. 2022 BMW iX – A New Electric Luxury SUV

The BMW iX was another important new arrival for the 2022 model year.

Rather than being simply an electric version of an existing BMW SUV, the iX was designed as a dedicated electric luxury SUV.

Its exterior design was deliberately futuristic, while the cabin introduced a minimalist approach with premium materials and advanced digital technology.

The iX also demonstrated BMW’s approach to combining electric performance with long-distance comfort and everyday usability.

Highlights

  • Fully electric powertrain
  • Futuristic exterior design
  • Spacious luxury interior
  • Advanced digital technology
  • All-wheel drive
  • Strong acceleration
  • Premium materials

The iX was particularly interesting for drivers who wanted the practicality of an SUV without giving up the advantages of electric power.

6. 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class – The Luxury Technology Benchmark

The latest-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class continued into 2022 as one of the world’s leading luxury sedans.

Car and Driver rated the 2022 S-Class highly, describing it as a benchmark among large luxury cars because of its lavish interior and extensive technology.

The S-Class is designed around the occupants as much as the driver. Its cabin combines high-quality materials with large digital displays, advanced driver assistance, sophisticated ambient lighting, and exceptionally comfortable seating.

For rear passengers, long-wheelbase versions can provide a limousine-like experience.

What Made 2022 Special for the Automotive Industry?

One of the biggest themes of the 2022 model year was the rapid development of electric vehicles and advanced technology.

Manufacturers were increasingly moving toward electrification while simultaneously improving autonomous-driving assistance, connectivity, digital displays, and interior comfort.

At the same time, traditional luxury SUVs continued to become more sophisticated.

The new Range Rover is a perfect example. It maintained its recognizable identity while adding four-wheel steering, advanced air suspension, new technology, and more sophisticated interior materials.

The automotive industry was therefore moving in two directions simultaneously: preserving traditional luxury while embracing new technology.

Which 2022 Car Stands Out the Most?

The answer depends on what you want from a vehicle.

For luxury SUV enthusiasts: the Range Rover is one of the most impressive choices.

For electric luxury: the Mercedes-Benz EQS and BMW iX stand out.

For technology: the Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes-Benz S-Class are particularly impressive.

For value in the luxury segment: the Genesis GV70 offers an interesting alternative to traditional premium brands.

For families: the Range Rover and Cadillac Escalade provide excellent combinations of luxury and practicality.

If you’re interested in the new cars for 2022, this post is for you.

As a professional road trip travel blogger, I get an opportunity to test/drive a lot of new and different types of vehicles. I recently attended the event in Chandler, Arizona, where many manufacturers were on hand to show off their latest new cars for 2022. Also in attendance were many automotive journalists and car reviewers. As a road trip blogger, my car knowledge pales in comparison to those in attendance, but I still had a blast getting to try out many of the new cars for 2022.

This is not an in-depth review of any of the cars I test drove, as I just did not have enough time with any one vehicle to share much information or opinion. That said, there were several stand-outs and I will provide some of the highlights I learned. Hopefully you will find this post insightful for doing additional research on your vehicle of interest.

Dodge Ram 1500 Limited Crew 4×4

I have been a long time Ford F-150 owner, never been much of a Dodge Ram fan, but this truck blew me away!  The smooth quite ride with robust throaty acceleration was quite impressive. The innovative 60/40 barn door tailgate, along with steps to get into the bed of the truck are very helpful. The high-quality leather seats were quite supple, which you don’t often find in a truck. The ride was almost like being in a Rolls-Royce, it’s so comfortable you hardly feel the bumps. When I was driving this new Dodge Ram I almost felt like the king of the road as this model was equipped with a 5-position ride suspension.

New Cars for 2022  First impression along with some highlights While this massive truck has great acceleration, its matched with surprisingly good stopping power. There are so many gadgets, knobs and dials, I sort of felt like I was in an aircraft cockpit. There’s also a lot of storage space with plenty of power and USB Outlets. This truck just exudes coolness! Click the following link for more information on the Dodge Ram.

One of the biggest surprises for me was the Toyota Camry TRD.

New Cars for 2022  First impression along with some highlights This is not your parent’s Camry, this new generation blends space, comfort, excitement, features, and price, into a sweet and sporty package. The interior and exterior styling is really well done, very sporty with great acceleration and handling.

I really liked the reddish burgundy color too. At $31,000 (as tested), this Camry TRD seems like a pretty darn good value.

After taking a Ferrari F8 on a long road trip last year, I was excited to test out the bigger and beefier Telluride. This is a very good-looking mid-size SUV and will likely be a contender in the hotly contested class.

I really liked the luxurious interior styling, and, the air-conditioned seats seem to be improved from the Sportage I drove. New Cars for 2022 First impression along with some highlights

The shifting seemed to be a bit soft and the acceleration a bit lagging, although the specs say it does 0-60 in 7.0 seconds, which is not bad for an SUV.

The price also seemed a tad high at nearly $47,000 (as tested), but given other comparable SUVs on the market, it may in fact be fairly priced.

Given my limited time driving, it’s a bit tough to provide solid opinions. This is without question a vehicle I’d like to spend more time getting to know. Click the following link for more information on the Ferrari F8.

This car unleashes extraordinary excitement. Out of all the new cars for 2022 on display, this is the one that got my heart pumping the most. I just loved both the interior and exterior styling.

While it’s in the SUV class, it’s pretty much all sports car. New Cars for 2022 First impression along with some highlights

This Quadrifoliate model goes 0-60 is a blistering 3.6 seconds. I think this might be the fastest short distance car I’ve ever driven.

Built into the DNA of this car are four driving modes, D for dynamic, N for natural, A for all-weather, and, race mode, which turns off some of the technology and gives the driver full control. I don’t think Americans know a great deal about Alfa Romeo, except for those old classic Spiders.

The company was actually founded back in 1910 in Milan, Italy and started racing in 1913. At $88,500, the Stelvio Quadrifoliate gives the Porsche Cayenne a run for its money, while being less expensive and has better performance. New Cars for 2022 First impression along with some highlights

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon New Cars for 2022 First impression along with some highlights

I think it’s been a long time since Jeep last had a pickup version of their capable off-road vehicle.

This Gladiator Rubicon is one bad-ass truck that seemingly has no limits.

You can buy the Gladiator stripped down for those who don’t want/need all the bells and whistles, or you can totally trick it out until your heart is content. I used to own a 1986 Jeep CJ-7 and it was not the most comfortable vehicle to drive.

The new Gladiator on the other hand is an absolute pleasure. Click the following link for more information on the Jeep wrangler.

Earlier this year I went on a road trip in the GMC Yukon , the close cousin of the Chevy Traverse and absolutely loved it. If you’re not familiar, the Traverse is a mid-size SUV spacious enough for a large family, yet does not compromise on performance or style. One of the features of the new Traverse that I loved was the fact that you can flip the rear-view mirror into a monitor, utilizing one of the rear cameras, which is perfect if you have a lot stowed in the back and can’t see through the window.
